Abstract
The paper describes experiences and reflections, matured at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Calabria (Italy) during the last decade, in the courses of Engineering Design Methods, held at the bachelor degree in management engineering and the master dgree in mechanical engineering. The courses, even addressed to different audiences, contain the functional analysis of an industrial product that characterizes the core of the discipline. In this paper, the product functional analysis is described and the problems of its teaching are reported. The application to a case study clarifies its use and its employent as a tool for discovering deficiencies in the devices already present in the market.
